Small hydro systems provide a very reliable source of power. The terminology can be a bit misleading – a small hydro system is actually quite a large system. The designations are as follows:

The disadvantage is that even a small system requires a reasonable water supply with a relatively high head.
As an example, a 500W pico hydro generator, would require 3.5 litre per second flow at a pressure of 30 meters.
500W seems to be a small generator but running 24 hours a day, produces 12 kWhs, so coupled with batteries, an inverter and/or solar panels, it becomes a very reliable off grid power system, with resilience against extended low sun periods
As a result of the flow required small hydro systems are only viable where there is a high rainfall or a year-round creek with a good water flow.
