To work out which Off Grid package best suits your circumstances, we will first need to find out your average daily power usage.
The electrical power rating of a typical appliance is generally given in Watts (W) which you can find by either looking at the appliance’s label or by reviewing our Typical Power Ratings for Appliances brochure. Power consumption and ratings can also be found in the user manual for the appliance.
The appliances daily energy consumption is calculated as the Wattage rating multiplied by the number of hours per day it is switched on or being used (watts times hours or W x hr).
So, for example, a mid-size TV has a rating of 400W. If it is used for 4 hours a day (24 hour period), then the total consumption of energy would be 400W multiplied by 4 hours which gives 1,600 watt-hours or 1.6 kWhr (kilowatt hours).
We need to repeat this process for all the appliances you would like to run. In order to size the inverter, we need to then work out how many appliances you would like to run simultaneously. For example, if we wanted to run a TV, Fridge, 6 lights, water pump and boil a kettle, we just add up the typical ratings for all these appliances to calculate the size of inverter we need to provide the required power. We then estimate how long you might use each item for during the day and during the night (periods of low sun), this then enables us to calculate the battery size (measured in amp hours Ahrs) and the number of solar panels required.
Please note: With the simultaneously use of appliances (e.g. fridge, kettle, microwave etc.) the maximum continuous output power that the inverter can deliver is fixed. This means the power system will only supply power up to its maximum rated wattage. Unless the inverter is rated for it you may not be able use all the connected appliances at the same time.
